چکیده
monkey (Macac fascicularis) 4 years after importation into the United States. Stress and immunosuppression associated with experimentation completed 2 weeks earlier may have contributed to the development of severe clinical disease. Clinical findings included severe regenerative anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, weakness, lethargy, weight loss, and anorexia. The infection was treated and successfully eliminated with chloroquine hydrocholoride administered intramuscularly at a dose of 5 mg/kg base given at 0, 6, 24, 48, and 72 hours. Treatment also included a blood transfusion and intensive supportive care.

0 re Hematologic Characterization of Naturally Occurring Malaria ( Plasmodium inui ) in Cynomolgus Monkeys
I Twenty of 47 recently imported cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were found to have malarial infections. The agent identified was Plasmodium inui. All infections were subclinical in nature. Parasitemias ranged from 10 to 900 parasites/mm of whole blood. Preand post-treatment hematologic values were evaluated following treatment with chloroquine. Treatment was effective in clearing para...
متن کاملMalaria in cynomolgus monkeys used in toxicity studies in Japan
Plasmodium spp. protozoa cause malaria and are known to infect humans and a variety of animal species including macaque monkeys. Here we report both our experience with malaria recrudescence in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) in a toxicity study and the results of a survey on Plasmodium infection in cynomolgus monkeys imported to Japan for laboratory use. A cynomolgus monkey from the t...
متن کاملEcology of malaria parasites infecting Southeast Asian macaques: evidence from cytochrome b sequences.
Although malaria parasites infecting non-human primates are important models for human malaria, little is known of the ecology of infection by these parasites in the wild. We extensively sequenced cytochrome b (cytb) of malaria parasites (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) from free-living southeast Asian monkeys Macaca nemestrina and Macaca fascicularis. The two most commonly observed taxa were Plasmo...

bred outdoors in malaria-endemic areas is not uncommon. However, with the exception of P. knowlesi, it is my understanding that malarial organisms found in cynomolgus monkeys do not pose a major zoonotic concern (although this can always change). Furthermore, it is my understanding that P. vivax does not infect macaques, including cynomolgus monkeys. Other malarial parasites of cynomolgus monke...
متن کاملBartonella quintana in Cynomolgus Monkey (Macaca fascicularis)
We identified a Bartonella quintana strain by polymerase chain reaction amplification, cloning, and sequencing of DNA extracted from lysed erythrocytes and cultured colonies grown from peripheral blood collected from a captive-bred cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis). This report describes naturally acquired B. quintana infection in a nonhuman primate.
